FIRST SALE AT TIMARU.

BULK OF CATALOGUE SOLD.

The first Timaru wool sale of the season was hold to-day. The total offering was 11,984 bales, and tho passings 485 bales. There was a full bench of buyers, representing Bradford, America and the Continent, and all took a good portion of the offering, local mills not operating as freely as usual. The demand for Merino wool was limited. Ilalfbred wool, compared with tho first sale last year, showed a drop of 2d, and halfbred hoggets, which was mostly tender, suffered considerably on that account. Threequarter-bred and crossbred wool met with a good demand and was on a par with last yoar's first sale. All through tho prices realised are considered satisfactory when compared with tho prices realised at other centres this season.

The following is the official range of prices:—

Merino. —Super, 19Jd to 21d; second combing, 18£ d to 19id; pieces, 15jd to 16d; necks, 17d to 20d; bellies, 14d to 143 d. i Halfbred.—Extra super, 23£ d; super, 21d to 22Jd; average, to 20|d; inferior, 16£ d to 18d. Hogget.—Extra super, 20d to 22d; average, 18d to 192 d; inferior, 16£ d to 17|d.

Threequarter-bred.—Extra super, 19d to 20^d; super, 17£ dto 18|d; average, 16|d to 17|d; inferior, 15d to 16Jd.

Crossbred. —Super, to 163 d; average, 14£ dto 15£ d; inferior, 12£ dto 14d.

Pieces.—Extra super, 20d; super, 17d to 18|d; avorago, 14d to 16d; inferior, 12d to 13jjd.

Bellies.—Good to super, 14a to 16;} d; low to medium, lOd to 13Jd. Locks. —Good to super, B£d to 10^d; medium, 7£d to B|d, Crutchings.—Good to super, to 13d; medium, 8d to Hid.

BRADFORD MARKETS QUIET,

DEMAND FOR TOPS RESTRICTED

Advice received by the Department of Agriculture from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London, under date December 15, states: —"The Bradford markets are quiet. Generally, the Home demand for tops is very restricted, and the tendency of the price is in favour of buyers. Present quotations are: 64's (Merino), warp, 3s lid to 4s per lb.; average, 3s 10s; 56's (super halfbred), 2s lOd; 50's, prepared, 2s 4Jd; 46's, prepared, Is lOcl to Is 10id.
