AIMS OF GOVERNMENT.
LAND AND UNEMPLOYMENT.
MR. RANSOM'S PROPOSALS
[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DANNEVIRKE. Saturday
Speaking at a civic reception tendered turn to-day in honour of his elevation to Ministerial rank, the Hon. E. A. Ransom Minister of Public Works, said the new Cabinet was looking forward to having the opportunity of again placing New Zealand in the forefront by enacting bene ficent legislation and making the, Dominion an object lesson to other parts of the Empire, as in the past.
While he was convinced there were ample funds in the country at present ho was satisfied there had been a lack of confidence among those handling large commercial and financial concerns, who had been afraid of placing fresh moneys in circulation It the new Government could restore confidence in their financial institutions and an outlet was found in new work of a profitable nature much of the stress would be overcome and the Dominion would bo on the fair way to progress once again.
As Minister of Public Works he- had to deal with the great question of unemployment. As it was one of tho serious problems which had to bo grappled with he was tiaving investigations made with a view to having certain lands brought into use which, with a certain amount of development, would eventually be brought into profitable use. These lands could absorb some of the men at present un employed, and this would go a long way toward alleviation of the position Evontually he hoped to clear up permanently the serious difficulty.
