BRITAIN AND CHINA.
NEW TARIFF PROMULGATED
' NOTE SENT FROM NANKING. British Wireless. RUGBY, Dec. 14. Mr. Lockcr-Lampson, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, in a written reply to a question in the House of Commons, states that in a Note dated December 5 the Minister of Foreign Affairs for China, Dr. C. T. Wang, notified the British Minister, Sir -Miles Lampson, that the new Hhinese Customs tariff had been promulgated, and would come into force on Feb ruary 1. With the exception of certain articles, which are subject to special rates, the ••ntes of duty appear to be identical with those of the interim schedule accepted by the foreign delegations in 1926. The commercial secretary at Shanghai lias been instructed to make a detailed examination of the tariff, and to report any discrepancies. No reply, so far as he is aware, has been returned to the Note of the Foreign Minister.
Mr. Locker-Lampson says Sir Miles Liunpson's visit to Nanking docs not indicate tho recognition of the National Government of China by the British Government. But its de jure recognition would be implied by the signature of any treaty which might be concluded as a result of tho negotiations which Sir Miles is now conducting.
