FIRES IN AUSTRALIA.
HOMESTEAD BURNED DOWN.
BUSH SEARCHED FOR SUSPECT. BRISBANE. Dec. 15. A message from Richmond says the homestead at tho Pctersford station was destroyed by firo on Thursday night. Tho building is alleged to have been set on fire by a well-known resident of the district, who, it is alleged, also fired a shot at Mr. McMillan, tho owner of ilio station, but missed. The man, who is said to bo suffering mentally, then disappeared into tho bush ■with tho rifle. Tho polioo aro searching for him. WOOL WORKS DESTROYED. DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT £7OOO. (Received December 15, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Deo. 15. The wool scouring works of Messrs. Hayes Brothers, at Bourke, have been destroyed by firo. The damage is estimated at £7OOO. Tho origin of tho firo is not known. . FATALITY AT BRISBANE. YOUNG MAN SUFFOCATED. BRISBANE. Dec 15. Mr. William McLean, agod 24, was suffocated when firo destroyed a block of flats in tho city. Tho firemen fought their way into Mr. McLean's bedroom and brought him out, but efforts to restore respiration were unavailing.
