YACHTING.
AKARANA CLUB'S EVENTS. CRUISING AND HARBOUR RACES. SEVERAL MISHAPS REPORTED. Cruising and harbour races were held by the Aknrana Yacht Club on Saturday under favourable weather conditions. The larger yachts and launches raced to Awaroa Bay. "VVaiheke. and the smaller classes competed over harbour courses. All events were started in Judge's Bay between the compass dolphin and a launch moored south. Con siderable interest was taken in the race for the lift T and X classes, in which the New .Tcllicoe boat Val met Avalon and Rona for tho first time. Getting the best of the start Bona led Avalon and Val until reaching tho Sandspit beacon, wheie Avalon took charge and was never headed finally beating Val across the finishing-lint l by two minutes. Rona finished 4m 5s after Val.
In the early part of the .afternoon h steady breeze was blowing from tho south but later in the day it shifted to the south west, and increased in strength. Competing in class M Maratea carried away her cross tree, while tho S class boat Mistral brokt her bowsprit. Tho keel yacht Nga-loa snapped her spinnaker boom near Bean Rock lighthouse nd the 22-footer Mario not only blevf out her Bpinnaker, but also broke tho boom. Several other boats also met with mishaps and had to retire. A largo nu.nber of club members and supporters journeyed to Awaroa Bay and in tho evening a concert and dance was held in Gordon's Hall. Tho Rev. Jasper Calder's Entertainers made a special trip to tho bay and provided u most enjoyable programme. Tho officials in charge of tho racing were: -Starter, Mr. W. A. The race for class V wus started at 2.30 p.m.. tho competitors being Wild Wave, Secret. Scud and Mystic. Tho boats crossed the lino in tho order named and the amsh wus timed as under Mystic, 5h Ora 235; Wild Wave. 5h lnt 33a; Scud, sli 7iuj3s; Secret, 5h 7in 675. Result;— Wild Wave, 1, Scud, 2. 'l'lio start ot the 20ft and 22ft classes was n very pretty one, 11 out of 12 starters crossing the lino within seconds of one another, lluiiv was first awuy, closely folowed by Rahiri, Woireie Man? Wayward, Uukoa, Mulua, Valeria, Lovelight, Veuus and Winifred in thut order. Mowai wus 4J minutes late Taking advantage ol the "go-as-you-please course' tho boats all worked close along the southern shore and made good progress.
The finishing times were:—L class: Venus, 4h 58m 555; Ra.hiri, 5h Otn 38s; Marie, 5h 3m 28s; Valeria, 5h 3m 58s; Maluu, sh«m; Rukoa. oh 4m 375; Huia. 5h 5m 255; Lovelight, 5h 6m 20s; Mowai. 5h 7m 295. Result: —Rakiri, 1; Venus, 2; Malua. 3; Huia, 4. N Class.—'Wairore. 5h 4m 28s; Winifred, 5h 7m 12s; Wayward, 5h 20m lis. Result:— Wairere, 1; Winifred. 2.
Only Celox urnl Starloch started in the race for class H, the former crossing the line ahead of her rival. The finishing, times were:—Starloch, 4h stim 17s; Celox, 5h 3in 21s. Result:—Starloch. 1. In the race for classes C and h Maybelle led the way over the line, closely followed by Mahoe, Wairiki and Niobe. lona being some lengths further astern. Wairiki soon overhauled Mahoe and later passed Maybelle. The finishing times weie:—Wairiki. 5h Om 445; lona, 5h 5m 58s: Maybelle, 5h 8m 7»: Mahoe, 5h 14m ds: Niobe, 5h 19m 40s. Result:—Mahoe. 1; Wairiki. 2: Maybelle. 3. . , The race for classes A and B brought out Waione, Ladyo Wilnm, Ngatoa and Thelma, the boats crossing the line in the order stated. Nga-Toa broke her spinnaker boom near Bean Rock lighthouse and lost several minutes in picking it up. 'lhe finishing times were:—Thelma, 4h 53m lis; Ladye Wilma. 5h 3m 495: Nga-Toa, 5h 4m 17«: Waione. 5h 5m '2'2h, Result:—Thelma. 1; Ladye Wilma. 2; Waione, 3. Five launches faced the starter at 3.« p.m.. the boats crossing the line in the following order:—Kenya. Coquette, Kalhryn R„ Helen C.. Xyrin. This event wns raced under the declared time system of handicapping and caused quite a lot of interest. The finshing times were:—Kenya, 5h Om 495; Coquette, 5h lm 555; Ayra, 5h llm 295; Katliryn R.. 5h 13m 395; Helen C., oh 3lm Kenya, lvathryn R. and Coquette stopped on the way to Awaroa. The result was:—Helei. C.. 1: Syria. 2. The winner took 4m longer to do the trip than lier estimated time. 2h 25m. and I>.yria covered the distance 10m 31s quicker than her declared time, which was 2h 20m. THE HARBOUR EVENTS. The M class produced six starters, which were sent away to an excellent despatch Matarere crossed the line just ahead ot Mawhiti, Maratea and Manene; then came Maroro and Maia. It was a run down th* harbour to the Bastion boacon. and they had not gon very far when Maratea had the misfortune to break her crosstree, which caused her to retire Manene gradually worked her way into the lead, followed by Matarere and Maroro. Approaching th» compass dolphin on the beat from Sandspit Matarere was holding second position, but just as she was about to make the dolphin she discovered that she was taking it oh the wrong band and was passed by Maroro, which was handy. On the completion of the first round the times were:—Manene, 3h 51 in 14s; Maroro, 3li 51m 365; Matarere. 3li 51m 495; Mawhiti, 3h 52m 545. Maia, which was making her first appearance this season, gave up on this round on account of some of her gear carrying away. Maroro did well in the second round, and an exciting finish saw Manene gain the verdict by 9a. Matarere meantime gave up. The finishing times were:—Manene, 4h 2Sm 445, 1; Maroro, 4h 28m 535, 2; Mawhiti, lh 29m, :iof, a. Mistral led the boats in class S over the line, and next to her catne Sea Sleigh, Atangntai, Waitiri and Aratu, in that order. Jlistral continued her lead until reaching the Bastion, whore she lost her bowsprit. Sea Sleigh then took charge and was never headed. The finishing times were:—Sea Sleigh, 4h 3ohi; /Yratu, 4h 39m 30s; Ataugatai, 4h 44m 335: Wailui, 4h 47m 245. Result:—Sea Sleigh, 1; Waitui, 2; Aratu. 3. The three star class boats, Ola IV., Moa and June, wcro sent away in Hie order stated. Ola and .Tune made a close tace of it. especially in the first round. Ola led on the beat up the harbour, but June cut her out at the compass dolphin, rounding it 49s ahead of her rival. In the second round Ola retired. The finishing times were:—.Tune, 4h 47m 225, X; Moa, 4h 54m 225.
In class Y Romp was first awny,. closely followed by Jupiter and Opaha. Romp continued lier lead on both rounds of the course, Opaha giving up in the second round. The finishing times were:—Romp, ■lh 17m 30s: Jupiter, 4h 19m 28s. Result:— Jupiter, 1. The competitors in the race for T and classes were:—Rona, Avalon, Val, Ramona Mnrie and Maybelle. At gunfiro the boats crossed the lino in the order stated and Rona continued her lead until rounding the Sundspit beacon. Here sheets were flattened and Avalon took charge and was never headed On tlie completion of the first round the times were:—Avalon, 4h 10m 41s; Val, 4h 13m 24b; Rona, 4h 14m 14s; Marie, 4h 15m lis. Maybello and Ramona retired in this round. The finishing times were:—Avalon, 41i 38m 255; Val, 4h 40m 255; Rona, 4h 44m 80s; Marie, 4h 48m fills Result: —Avalon, 1; Val, 2; Rona. 3 THE OUTBOARD MOTOR-BOATS. I'hree races were held for outboard motorbouts The course was laid off the clubhouse. enabling those interested to obtain mi excellent view of the racing. The first rare resulted in a win for Miss Arawa, with Hum Bug second. The finishing times were;— Miss Arawa, Sli 52m 18s; Hum Bug 3h 52m 233 The result of the second race, for class B. was ns follows:—Baby Joy, 4h 7m Ss, 1; Misn Taniaki, 4h 7m 13s, 2. The final rare was a general handicap and .brought out Hum Bug fscr), Miss Arawa (scr), Babv Joy <2m 80s) and Miss Tamaki (2m 30s). Hum Bug raD very consistently over the 'hree-lnp course and won by 17s from Miss Tamaki, the other boats giving up. The finishing times were:—Hum Bug, 4h 23m 3fis ; Miss Tamaki, 4h 23m 525. The officials in charge of the outboard races were Messrs. Wilkinson and F. Chi vers.
