DESERT glow wins cup.
SPRINT RACE TO AUSSIE.
Fine weather favonred tho Waipa Racing Club's Annual Meeting at To Awamutu on Saturday and there was a good attendance. Tho track was in splendid order alter tho recent rain and somo fine raciug was witnessed. For tho second year in succession Desert Glow won the Te Awamutu Cup.' His victory was achieved by a very narrow margin and a lucky run on the rails in the straight was the* deciding factor. The crack sprinter Aussie was responsible for a brilliant effort in winning the Flying Handicap under the steadier of lOst. 61b. From the start he was never further back than second and had no difficulty in disposing of the opposition at the finish. Aussie was never better and is now likely to come into further favour for tho Railway Handicap. Soveral horses-fell during the running of the Orakau Hack Handicap and a couple of tho riders were injured, C. Lee having a collarbone broken and S. Tremain sustaining slight concussion. . An inquiry was held concerning tho accident, which was attributed to Archiieen gotting on the heels of Just Nell and coming down, Ossian and Red Day falling over him. Speculation was fairly brisk and the totalisator handled £23,{l 1 90, compared with £23,112 last year. The investments thus showed an increase of £B7B. The following were the results: —

KOTES ON THE TRACING. TWO SURPRISE WINS. BY ARCHER. The feature of the racing wns " ,0 suocesfl of Aussie in the sprint, as his performance was one o' considerable merit Close finishes were also a feature and in several races the margins between the placed horses were very ehorl Most of the winners were w«ll fancied, but the wins of Patere and C'ynthia N were of the surprise order and • both returned double-figure dividends. Sixteen started in the Plrongia nurdles and it was a good betting race, with High* r flown, Star of The East and M ester Holey f "tha best backed' Gala Day received the best of a straggling itart, But was soon .joined by Highflown. With four furlongs .covered these horses were out a couple of m from Bracken Abbey, who was eight clear of Lady Spalpeen. It resolved |: iato 4 airtigqiit between Highflown And Gala
Day, and in the end Highflown, who oatjumped Gala Day, won by over a length. Lady Spalpeen was four lengths away third and Star of The East fourth. Then followed Lady Cintra, who came from a long way back, Farndon and Master Roley. Highflowa is an improved horse. Gala Day needs more experience, but should win soon. There were only six runners in the Kihikihi Handicap and Mucroom was a £230 better favourite than Plying Juliet, who had a slight call over Leitrim. Leitrim cot cut out at the start Takutama and Macroom being the first to shew out. When they had settled down Macroom and Flying Juliet were the leaders from Leitrim, who had run up quickly. Waltzer and Takutama. The field was in close order at the top, Macroom and Flying Juliet leading into the straight from Takutama and Te Koroke Flying Juliet finished best, and won by length from Te Koroke. who cut Macroom out of second by half-a-lengl;h Takutama was fourth with Waltzer next and Loitrim Jast. Flying Juliet is very fit, but. Macroom is not quite herself yet. The Waipa Plate attracted a large field and outside of Indolent and Uaviland tho runners were at good prices. Tho event provided a surprise, for the little-fancied I'atere got to the front early and lasted long enough to win by a head from Roman Pearl. - who whs always well up and rnado a determined bid on the outside at the finish. Unoco was two lengths away third and Princess Rain fourth Next to finish were Havilatid Indolent and! Dainty Manners. Haviland was well Up throughout, but is not seasoned enough yet. Indolent did not begin quickly and will do better later. A Close Finish. The To Awairutu Cup was productive of an exciting finish id tho placed horses were separated by very short margins. The Desert Glow-Prcdice bracket was £7l better backed than Mervette. who was £SOO more fancied than The Lover From a good start Mervette and Prcdice 'oon took up the running from Siaosi, The Lover and Papatu. Going out of the straight The Lover moved up on the outside and joined Mervetto in tho lead, the pair making play along the back from Prodice Siaosi and Papatu (who were in close company) and Desert Glow. There was no change across the top and round the bend, where th? field was in close order. Once in line fo the post the leading five spread across the course and left an opening on tho rails. Desert Glow seized this and cumo home in gocd style to win by a neck from Siaosi, who defeated Tho Lover by a similar margin Mervette was right up fourth with Prodice and Papatu also close, and Tidal several lengths further back. Desert Glow was lucky to get such a tine run. Tho Lover was the unlucky horse, as he was momentarily unbalanced when Mervetto carried him out at tho foot o' iht straight, Prodice bandaged oehind, still looked pretty bu* was always prominent and only faded near the post She should be in great heart for the summer carnival Transformer and Tidal were never in tho picture, but Tidal was running on at tho finish.
For tho Paterangi Handicap Wenday was an odds-on favourite, with Lucy Roso and Boomerday next in demand. Lucy Roso began quickest and made play in tho early stages from Always, Rarangi, Boomerday and Maurea. Running across the top Boomerday and Scat moved up and the order into the straight was Lucy Rose, Always, Wenday (who came through on the fence) and Scat. In a good finish Lucy Rose lasted long enough to win by a head from Wenday with Scat half a neck away third. Always was fourth, with Rarangi and Maurea next. Lucy Roso was ridden a nice race in front by A Tinker. Scat was a trifle unlucky and his turn should arrive shortly.
Hakanoa Lunette and Black Maire were backed in that order for the Orakau Hack Handicap. Black Maire found his quickest and was the leader along the back frohi Just Nell. Some Lady, Lunette and Rose Arch. Some Lady ran up on the outside of,the leader at the top, where Hakanoa and Quinsilia also improved their positions. Black Maire and Some Lady were first round the bend, closely followed by Lunette, Quinsilia and Hakanoa. As they straightened up Lunette came through on the fence to score nicely by a neck from Black Maire, who beat Some Lady by a head. Just Nell who ran about a lot with her apprentice rider, waß a close fourth, succeeded by Hakanoa and Cybele. Archieleen, Ossian and Red Day fell just as the field was Bearing the home turn. A Brilliant Performance. Twelve starte-i in the Flying Handicap, Nancy Lee being a slightly better favourite than Liaison, with Aussia third choice at a nice price Ruffles and Aussie were quickest to begin and carried the field along to the itraight, where Marble King, Joy Germ and Nancy Lee were handy. Aussie then went, away to win by a length and ahalf from Nancy Lee. Town Bird was two lengths away third and Master O'Rorke fourth. The winner registered a brilliant performance, carrying 10.6 and beating his field, which included the brilliant Nancy Lee. in decisive fashion in a fast-run race. The reception he was accorded was a tribute from an appreciative public. I stood closo to Aussie after his return to scale and his respiration was sb steady as if he had only cantered the distance. There is no doubt that G. Paul has Aussie very fit and the crack sprinter should strip in perfect condition when he goes out for the Railway Handicap on Boxing Day. Awarere and The Lamb were heavily backed for the Ohatipo Handicap, with the others at fair prices. Awarere and Cynth'.a N began best, Cynthia N leading along the back with Awarere and Prince Lu in close attendance and King Smock also handy. Cynthia N and Prince Lu wero in charge at the top and led into the straight from Awarere and King Lu. Cynthia N held her own in the run home and won by half-a-length from King Lu, with Te Koroke two and a-half lengths away third. Awarere was fourth nnd King Smock fifth. King Lu is sure to improve with the raco and it may bo the samn with Awarere. who thrives on plenty of galloping. Cynthia N was little fancied and made her backers a nice return. THE SUMMER MEETING.
