VAGRANTS IN THE COUNTRY.
Sir, —In reply to "Simple Simon's" letters, farmer's wives, etc., are not safe from the down-and-out, who must beg, steal, or starve when away from organised charity. Any hungry man. of lowered moral character, is potentially dangerous to tho weak and defenceless, and should be the care of the community, and not of isolated individuals We cannot rid the world of undesirables, but the State can protect us from them and not send them where such protection is weak or nonexistent. Also, how often do vagrants give definite proof, by references from employers or other means, that they have work to go to ? Backblocks.
