TEMPERANCE ACTIVITIES.
The annual meeting of the Auckland Women's Christian Temperance Union was held on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. John Cook presided. The secretary's report showed a steady year of activity. The balance-sheet was presented by the treasurer, and showed a satisfactory state. Major Gordon gave an interesting report of prison work among women. She paid a tribute to the probationary system, which she considered gave opportunity to make good outside the walls of the prison. She thanked the union for their assistance to the Christmas cheer provided for the women.
Reports were read from the following departments:—Evangelistic, Maori, and War Memorial Library, Bible in Schools, cradle roll, press, peace and arbitration, white ribbon and Maori work. Mrs. Uulljames, superintendent, read an appeal from a Maori family in the North, asking for clothes to he sent to them. She also rend an interesting letter, fi;oir> a native woman of Niue, giving an encouraging report of tlie white ribbon work on the island, especially among the young people. Mrs. Cook, the delegate for the union to the National Council of Women, g a £ e ;i resume of the work undertaken by the council during the year. The election of officers resulted in the present officers being re-elected, they being as follows President, Mrs. John Cook; recording secretary, Mrs. J. W. Taylor; corresponding secretary, Miss N. Dewar; treasurer, Mrs. Dowling: vicepresidents, Mosdames Fulljames, Ready, Pierce, and Miss Maundes. „ An appeal was made by Hall for books and toys for Christmas for the children in tlie back blocks.
