RACING DESCRIBED.

SLOW PACE IN CUP EVENT. DEFEAT OF THE FAVOURITES. [B\* TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.j WELLINGTON. Monday. If tho weather had been ordored it could hardly havo been bettor than that provided to-day for tho conclusion of tho Wellington meeting. There was not a breath of wind, but a cloudy sky kept tho temperature just pleasantly warm. There was an enormous attendance of holiday-makers, who swelled tho totalisutor returns. Backers had a rather moro profitable day, but thero were ono or two upsets, notably Rapier's victory in tho Harcourt Cup. Thero was a misunderstanding in regard to tho presentation of the cup, for H. Nurse, tho trainer, had ordored Rapier away on a train immediately after tho race, so that he could go South by to-night's ferry steamer No ono was presont to receivo tho trophy, and the ceremony had to bo cancelled. Tho race itself developed into a moro half-mila sprint. Beaumont made no mistake in tho Second Hurdles, and scored with case. Be jumped well and outpaced tho field. Askari could not go with Beaumont at tho finish. Vexatious ran jii3t a fair race, and Carinthia and Polyphemus were disappointing. Baliyfarnon and Ripdale were not injured when they fell. Polyphemus. Vexatious and Carinthia were all solidly backed, Beaumont paying a really good prico. Ripdalo and Ballyfarnon crashed at tho first fenco. Ballyfarnon knocking a panel flat and lying winded. Carinthia, Beaumont and Askari led past tho stands from Vexatiouß, Sir Moment and Pantler. Beaumont was in charge with Askari round tho top, and to tho turn from Vexatious. Polyphemus, Carinthia and Pantler. Beaumont went through tho gap in the last feuco, and won pulling up by thrco lengths from Askari. who beat Vexatious by two lengths. Carinthia, Polyphomus and Lady Gay wero n6 Zippor, a brother to Magna Cliarta. really mado no race over the last bit of tho Spring Trial Stakes. Ho is a six-year-old gelding who has done little, yet was well expected, and duly arrived, after being well placed all tho way. Stanchion ran a fino race, and bo did Rabbi. Both aro still eligible for trial plates. Last Mark and Jot Black aro very likoly improvers. Jet Black and Last Mark wero the popular selections, with a surprising amount of support for tho winner. Zippor.

Sir Spear jumped out first from Roi do Val, Zippor and Rabbi. Sir Spear led across tho top from Zippor, Roi do Val, Stanchion and Rabbi. Jot Black raced up handy to the leaders at tho turn, where Sir Spear was beaten, Zippor was in charge at the falso rail, and went on to beat Stanchion by a length. Rabbi was a head away, third, and then camo Last Mark. Roi do Val and Jet Black together, with Sir Spear heading tho rest.

Historic registered a convincing performance in tho Tararun. Handicap, for ho gavo tho leaders a long siurt and beat them homo in a ding-dong finish. Mondip. with 9.0, was given a hard race, for tho light-weight Itory Mor kopt him at it all tho way. Historic just beating him on the post. Rory Mor and Moorgus both ran really good races, and Spearmisß and Courageous finished on. Royal Linengo ran disappointingly. Mendip was backed down to a Hliort price, with Historic and Tanagra next in request. Narrow Win in Hard Finish.

Historic was the first to movo from Mendip. Royal Lineago and Rory Mor. Rory Mor and Mendip led round tho half-mile bond from Royal Lineago, Moorgas, Shining Star and Historic. Tanagra ran up handy going to tho turn, tho leaders still being tho samo. Historic moved up again in tho straight, and responding well to pressure beat Mendip by a head. Rory Mor was a neck away, third. Moorgas fourth and Spearmiss, Courageous and Shilling Star next. Passbook improved a little on her first day form, and was always going liko a winner in front in tho Roseneath Handicap. Eqnitant jumped out smartly and stuck on to finish second. Admiral Drako and Duellona raced oil to finish third and fourth. Crash showed plenty of speed for a first appearance. Francolin lost her chance at tho start, when there was somo squeezing. Francolin was a hot favourite. Francolin failed to jump out as smartly as Crash, Equitant, Courtliko and lass Book, with Head Seranc last. Crash was beaten a furlong from homo, and Pass Book and Equitant drew away. Pass Book winning by two lengths. Admiral Drako was half a-length awav third, and thon came Duellona, Francolin. Emotion. Crash and Koyal Line. Goshawk's Fino Performance. Tho Pearco Handicap saw Goshawk win again, and win very impressively. He appeared to bo checked slightly at tho hallmile, but was going on well at tho end. Teri's form was a mild surprise, and an improvement on first-day form. Benzora ran a fino race, and Mandane'B fourth was one to remember. Mask and Staghunter both ran decent races. Goßhawk was naturally a good first choico, with Mask and Benzonj, the only others backed to any extent. Vigilance and Royal Gamo were left, and Teri and Pangolin led down tho back straight. Benzora, Staghunter and Goshawk together, and Salrose. Kilperon and Panther were next, with Mandane last of tho main body. Goshawk dropped back slightly going to the turn, wherj Staghunter was weakening. Teri was in front at tho falso rail, with Benzora hanging on and Goshawk putting in good work. Goshawk went oil to beat Teri by half-a-lengtn, Benzora half-a-length away third. Mandane. finishing at a great rate, was fourth, and then camo Mask. Kilperon and Shining Armour. Tho Harcourt Cur> as «• distance test wa a failure. Rapier finished with rare brilliancy and courage, and held off Laughing Prince's determined challenge. Langhm" Prince was not disgraced, and Star Stranger failed in a mere sprint. Commendation was kept a long way back, and also failed in tho sprint. Ho apparently needs more time. Star Stranger and Laughing Prince wero first and second favourites carrying twothirds of tho investments between tueui. Rapier kept up tho big dividends. Sprint Homo in Straight. Beacon Light led out of tho straight from Starf Stranger. Kapier. Laughinc Prince. Commendation and Black Mint. Ihcro wag somo scrimmaging, and Commendation and Laughing Prince suffered. The first two furlongs took 28s and the first three 425. J-h ell Black Mint went to tho front, and showed tho way round tho top to Rapier and Laughing Prince, with Stai Stranger and Beacon Light next, and Commendation a&t. Tho first fivo furlongs took 1.7. and tliero was no pace on until the homo turn was

reached. , ~ , That Black Mint was then still m charge from liapier and Laughing Prince, ai>d Star S trail per. Beacon .Light and Conunenelation closing up, is some indication of tho pace. Rapier camo through smartly and headed Black Mint nt tho falso rail, and in tho sprint home Laughing Prince, desperately ridden, could not reach Rapier, who fought him of! and won by hnlf-a-longth. tSt;ir Stranger whs two lengths away third with Commendation four lengths further 'back. Black Hint beat Beacon Light homo. ~ , . j i The. Nninai Handicap snw the. first days form justified, for Arrow Lad stuck on jiißt too well for Reremoana, who finished fast from a long' wny back. Lysander was always in the picture nnd did well. Booster and Keddar wero running on. Joy King run an improved race. Helotis again showed plenty of pace. The Hawk was not sighted. Chelono, The Hawk nnd Booster wore at the head of the betting. Chelono and Ilelotia begun best and led on fo the course proper from Lysander. Joy King. Dobbin and Arrow Lad. Helotis had hnd enough at the turn, nnd Chelono faded out a little further on. Arrow Lad, on the inside, and Lysander, in tho centre, were fighting it out over the last furlong, when Reremoana and Booster joined in. Arrow 1 nr l t n «t"d just long enough to defeat the fast-finishing Rercmonna bv a head, with Lysander a head away third. Booster was right up fourth, and then camo Keddar, Tick's and Kilbransyth. . Callnnmore finished very well in the liine Handicap and scored convincingly. He wns not one of tho smartest away, but was handy nt the turn and tho day suited a horse with wind infirmity. Veronese just weakened at the finish, and Toheka stuck on to dead-heat with her for second. WAT PAW A COUNTY CLUB. SPORT AT HASTINGS. VICTORY FOR MOUNTAIN HEATH. [nt TELEGRAPH. —riU'.SS ASSOCIATION.] HASTINGS. Monday. Tho annual meeting of tho Waipaya County Racing Club was held oil tho Hawko's Bay Jockey Club's course at Hastings to-day, in fine weather.
