REGIMENTAL SHOOTING.
MEETING IN NOVEMBER. CADETS AND TERRITORIALS. Good entries are coming in for tho No. 1 Regimental District rifle meeting, and it is expected thet when entries close on November 5 the total number of competitors will equal that of last year, when over 600 cadets and territorials took part. The rifle competitions will be fired at the Penrose range on November 23 and 24, whilo the machine-gun matches will be decided on the previous Saturday, November 17. This meeting will be tho first since tho No. 1 district was extended to take in the No. 3 area, North Auckland. The No. 1 district formerly extended from Otahuhu and Penrose to Avondale and Now Lynn, but it now covers tho whole of the northern peninsula to North Cape. In order that competitors in northern districts will not have to travel too far a subsidiary meeting at Whangarei will be hole! on tho same dates, and £25 lias been allocated from the funds to provide pri.zomoney and medals. A comprehensive programme of matches has been drawn up for the meeting, covering all classes of defence units. There are two matches for cadets under 16 years, four for artisan cadet units under 18 years, and four for secondary school cadets. Aggregate and teams matches have also been included, covering all ages of competitors, many of them being framed on the lines of service conditions. Three other practices are open to all territorials.
Great intorcst is being shown in the machine-gun matches, which are all teams contests designed to reproduce as far as possiblo conditions met with on active service. In tho past Viekers and Lewis gunners have not received great encouragement, but in this year's programme varied practices have been arranged. A keen spirit of rivalry in the machine-gun sections of territorial units now exists and entries have been received from teams representing artillery, engineers, infantry, Army Service Corps and naval units. Every Saturday competitors who desiro to practise are allowed tho use of tho Penrose range, where rifles and ammunition aro supplied by two staff officers who aro available to givo instruction and advice. Competitors who desire to retain any particular ritlo for their use at tho meeting aro able to havo it reserved for them. A largo number of secondary schoolboys aro making uso of the range, upwards of 80 practising on Saturday mornings. With tho revival of interest in servico shooting by riflo clubs it is expected that a number of riflemen will also tako part in the meeting.
