Jockey Club's Summer Meeting extended over three days in 1899 and 1900. In 1898 (the year Prioress won the Takapuna Cup) the meeting only extended to two days. NOTES BY PHAETON. FiLLERSLIE SUMMER MEETING. The publication of -nominations for the Auckland Cup and several other important events •is a reminder that another summer ■meeting at Ellerslie is not a great way of!. 'l'nkcn all round (ho entries which tho eecretar.v, Mr. W. S. Spence, had lo range up yesterday arc in every way .most satisfactory The particular raco in which most interest was centred in tho posting of the nominations was, of course, tho Auckland Cup. The -It horsc3 engaged include all the leading performers and altogether the entry can be regarded as highly satisfactory. Tho weights for the Auckland Cup are not due till December and. with the Wellington and Canterbury meetings intervening, a great deal of racing will have taken place ere Mr. F. J. McManemin will be required to cast the handicaps for the big event set. down for decision at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. PINK NOTE AT SIX YEARS. Pink Note, who opened his six-year-old career by running second to Set Sail in tho Geraldine Cup, following that up by registering a victory in tho Mosgiel Handicap at Wingatui on Thursday, was a good performer last season. In the decision of the Wellington Cup last January he finished second to Star Stranger, mid in tho following month ho won the Dunedin Cup. under 8.5. running the milo r.nd a-balf in 2m 325. A win in the Mosgiel Handicap (11 miles) may not count for a great, deal in summing up the question attaching to tho New Zealand Cup, tho distance of which extends six furlongs further, but, Pink Note can be voted nicely treated in the big race at Riccarton with 7.7. Up to the present Pink Note has contested !3 races and liia record stands as follows : UnFirst. Second. Third, placed. At 3yrs . . 7 1 3 5 At lyrs . . 2 t 1 (i At syrs ..3 3 1 a At Oyrd .. 1 1 0 0 13 9 5 1G Pink Note, who was bred by hi 3 owner, Mr. J. A. Ainge, was got by Paper Money (.son of Greenback) from All Pink (daughter of All Red). THE CAULFIELD GUINEAS. The above-named event, with its SOOOgna its prize-money, has long held a place with important events: of the Australian turf, and "o-day's race will mark the -18 th contest. Tho cabled list of the final acceptances show lhat 15 horse 3 were paid up for, so that there is material for a good race. Though Moll ison was defeated in the A.J.C. Derby. I the fact of the distance for the C'aulfield Guineas onW extending to a mile will, it is widely held, be well in his favour. !ind. with some-reason to accept the son of Seremond as a horse likely fo prove great over eight furlongs, ho is snro to rule a Mrong favourite for to-day'a race. Tho following is 8. list of the horses engaged: The Gay Mutineer, by Lucknow—Stage Girl. Balmerino, by All Black—Anna. Cimbrian, by Devizes—Chersonese. Salonia, by Salatis—Divonia. Strogoff. by Lanius—Onega. Gilt Edge, by Valais—Glittering Gold. Htrephon, by Salatis—Soldier's Love. Mollison, by Seremond—Molly's Robe. Faramanch, by Valais—Farmetta. Merab, by Two—Linfail. Elizabeth's March, by March Along— Ouairneta. Flash Beau, by Beaufort—Dudes. Ramulus. by Rossendale—Royal Pet. Volga Maid, by Limelight—Princess Volga. C'lirysobar, by C'hrysolaua—Malbar. •

THE DUNEDIN GUINEAS. The Dunedin Guineas comes up for dccision to-day, and the fact of the issue being voted very open serves to invest the impending contest with keen interest. The following is fi list of the horses engaged: Goblin Market, b g, by Absurd-Cherry Mart. Noteworthy, b g, by Paper Money—Gazeworthy. Phastar, br g. by Great Star—Miss I'hast. I'ound Note, br g. by Paper MoneyLa T'aix. Silver Paper, b g, by Paper MoneySilver Peak. Starshooter, b g. by Archery—Stardaneer. Childsplay, b f, by Autumnua—Helter Skelter. Prickles, eh f, by I'anmure— Brambletye. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES. The Masterton Handicap (ll miles) is tho leading event to be run at that meeting today. Tho following is a list of tho horses engaged: —Black Mint, 8.11; Blimp. Royal Game. 8.1; D.ivid Garrick, 8.0; Horomea. "7.13; Anolo. Tcri, 7.8; Kilmiss, 7.6; Talisker, 7,1; Wild Pigeon, 7.2; Vigilance, Imperial .Spark, 7.0. The leading wcicht-for-age event set down for decision at the Victoria furl Clubs lneotirg today is tlx: Caulfield Stakes, which is run over nine furlongs. The English-bred horse Gothic, whose brilliancy is loudly extolled, figures among tho entrants, and tho two most noteworthy Australian-bred ones engaged are AmounU nnd Vaals. Judging from tho tone of a Melbourne cablegram lo band, tho Auckland-owned gelding Prince Humphrey may be expected to reach Flemington early in the coming veek. Prince Humphrey is not engaged at tho Victoria Amateur Turf Club's meeting, ■ m d it. is understood that, the first race to bo exacted from him in Victoria will be in connection with the W, S. Cox 1 late, which is to be run over nine and a-lialf furlongs at. the Moonco Valley meeting on October 27. The valuo of tho race is i' 1100 (i'IOOO in specio and a gold trovihy of the value of £100). The winner's portion of the stake is £750 and tho trophy. Phastar, who led the field home in the Maungatua Handicap at the Dunedin meeting on Thursday, is on Australian-bred gelding by Great Star—Miss I'hast. At two years old Phastar rau unplaced in five of the six races bo contested, but he litis evidently improved with age. Phastar. it may be remarked, figured in the sale-ring on two occas-ois at tho yearling stage of his career. In April. 1927, he was sent up for sale at Randwick (N.8.W.), when he fell to the bid of Mr. J. Donald, of Wanganui, at 380gns. In the following July he went up to auction at Trenlliam with several other Australian-bred youngsters and was bought for 3f>ogns, so that he was not m profitable purchase to Mr, Donald, who received 20gns less from his sale than he paid for him, and, then incidental charges have, of coarse, to be added.

CLEAN BIDING. SYDNEY STANDARD HIGH. BY ARCHER. It is r.ot uncommon nowadays to see horses meet with interference in races am' •usually it is the carelessness of some rider that is responsible for the trouble. Some jockeys, in their anxiety to procure good positions, are prone to take risks by cutting in too quickly, and frequently actions of this kind act detrimentally to the chances of the horses close behind. A feature of the racing that particularly impressed nn. during my visit to Sydney was the cure exercised by the riders in keeping their course in the eariy stages of a race. There was generally an absence of crowding that wo frequently see ill the fir3t furlong of races on our- courses. Action on the part of the stipendiary stewards has been respon. sible for the standard of clean riding one sees in the metropolitan urea in Sydney. Any jockey who is- responsible for interfer ence is indeed lucky to escape trouble. Offenders ai'e usually suspended for a month or longer and this has had the effect of making the. riders use restraint and care. It would be pleasing to find the same state of affairs prevailing in the Dominion. Our stipendiary stewards have not the power to suspend like those on the other side, bt.t vigilance on their part, together with action by judicial connnittees, will soon have the desired effect. On the whole. New Zealand racing ia on a. high plane and it is therefore to be hoped steps will be taken to reduce crowding and interference to a minimum.

TE KUITI FACING CLUB. ANNUAL RACE MEETING., Tno annual race meeting of the Te Kuiti Racing Club is fixed to be held on November 21 and '26. With private accommodation offering, stabling for 60 horses will be available. The successful application for the position of secretary to the le Kuiti facing Club was Mr. A. W. Whyte. TURF IX AUSTRALIA. THE CAULFIELD MEETING. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received October 12, 10.15 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 12. The horse Opera Queen arrived at Caulfield from Adelaide to-day and will run in the Derby and the Oaks. The jockey, M. McCurtcn, is expected to ride Hynanna in the Caulficld Stakes, and Thurnbell on the first division of to-morrow's welter. J. Muuro will ride Amounifl in tho Stakes, and St.. Andrew in the Debutante Stakes. Mollison cantered at Caulfield to-day and moved frc-ily. JOCKEYS APPEAL FAILS. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. SYDNEY. Oct. 12. The jockey. Res:. LUCK OF THE SALE-RING. interesting stories. The importance of having luck on your side in dealing , with racehorses is best exemplified by relating the history of Isinglass, the biggest stake-winner m the history of the English turf (remarks ' Beacon"). Lord Alington owned a Wculock marc named Deadlock, which lie thought so little of that he sold her to Captain Machcll for £2O. but a sovereign of that amount was returned tor luck. Captain Machcll soon parted with Deadlock, but later on be recognised her in pulling a. farmer's cart. Ho made a deal with the former and exchanged a. cart colt for the mare. Mating her with Isonomy, he bred Isinglass, who won him the Derby and St.. Leger nnd stakes »mounting lo over £37.0C0, as well as a fortune, in bets. Little Wonder, the smallest horse that ever won mi English Derby, was picked up for 63gns. He stood only 1-1.3! hands, so was well named. Another English classic winner picked up for a mere song was Octavian, who won the St. Leger for the Duke of Leeds. - The duke bought him from one of his tenant farmers for £lO. Great horses are often bred from the most unpromising material. The dam of Carbine was said to be a bleeder, and there was a well authenticated story to the'effect that the stud groom at tho Duke of Westminster's nd thought so little of her that she was sent to London for sale without a pedigree. Sir Hercules Robinson, however, knew her and her pedigree, so lie bought her for tho New Zealand Stud Company for lSOgns and shipped her to the Dominion, where she bred Carbine and another good horse in Carnage. Another bleeder lo achieve fame was Laura, who was said to bleed even after a canter. She was a shy feeder and was "as delicate as il rabbit." She was sold by Sir John Astley to a miller, but it is not known whether Sir John had a grudge against the miller. The new owner of Laura sent her to Lord Clifden. and in that way bred tho St. Leger winner Petrarch, whom lie afterwards sold for IO.OOOgns. A man needs a lot of luck whether buying or breeding racehorses.

REVIEW OF THE FIELDS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Friday. Everything points to the racing to-mor-row at Mnsterton being most interesting and, if tho weather is fine, the form displayed should be of value (or later on. The course. with its long straight, is 0110 of the best of" those of the minor clubs. The weather promises well. The Nursery Handicap is the first race and Royal Flyer and Courtlike, of course, have the best public performances. Push finished well yesterday morning at Trenthum. For the Maiden Stakes no doubt betting will take a wide range, for Stanchion, Chief Singer, Rillelt. Tcbcka, Jet Black and Dainty Ways arc all likely to be supported. Stanchion has done well through the winter and he should be prominent. For the Higlnveight Handicap Starboard Light may bo favourite. Shining Armour should run out the mile solidly. Lin Arlington appeals more than any of those lighter weighted.

In tho Landsdowne Handicap Historis may not bo quito re&dy, but Kalos and Freeze Out should run well. Grey Mist, and Arrow Boy have handy weights. is applies even more to Rory Mor and Baskier. The draw and luck in running may play its part in this event. Knlo3 should be suited by the long straight.

For the Masterton Handicap Blimp appeals more than Black Mint, and the long straight may not be quite to tho liking of Royal Game. At ten furlongs David Garrick, if he has a New Zealand Cup chance, should show up with 8.0. Horomea. Anolo and Teri are likely to be backed on their Carterton form. Kilmiss is another who should appreciate the long straight. David Garrick, Blimp and Anolo may show up. The top weight in tho Lawn Handicap. Gold Cure, disappointed in the early spring after being one of the most promising horses seen out at Trentham in July. He nay make amends to-morrow. Moorgas is by 110 means badly treated. Full Murk adored impressively at tho Carterton meeting and probably he will be favourite. Courageous is improving. In the Grandstand Handicap Commendation has a big load and his barrier habits are. still uncertain. If he goes away right, however, it must be recognised that he is not one class but several above this field. Royal Game, Horomea, Anolo and Teri are all engaged earlier in the day. so the field may bo a small one.

In the concluding event luck and 'the draw will again be of importance, but if Arrow Boy ia reserved for this event he may be favourite. Dry Area and Grey Mist may also have some friends. FORTHCOMING MEETINGS. WAIKATO HUNT. Acceptances for all events to bo run at the Waikato Hunt meeting close next Monday at 5 p.m.. and the same may be lodged either with the race secretary, Mr. Walter .Stopford, Cambridge, or with Messrs. Blomficld and Co.. High Street, Auckland. DAKGAVILLE RACING CLUB. Nominations for all events to be run at tho Dargnville Racing Club's meeting at Avondale on November 1 and :t, close 011 Friday, October 19. at 5 p.m.. with the race meeting secretary. Mr. A. J. I'arqiihar, at Avondale Jockey Club's Office, Victoria Street West. SOME BIG FIGURES. LORD DERBY'S HORSES. When tho last mail to hand loft London Lord Derby was well ahead as tho leading owner, and, with tho victory registered by his filly Toboggan in the Jockey Club Stakes, iu is now quite certain that he will again head tho list of winning owners by n considerable margin. In making up the amount won in stakes by horses carrying the colours of Lord Derby from 1019 to 1927 I found tho same to be £26;).549. so that, if we compute their winnings this season at £50,000, wo get a grand total of £'313,510. Big figures, truly, for a period of nine years, but racing in England is very expensive to an owner, and it would bo highly interesting to know how the earnings of Lord Derby's horses in prize-money balance with tho outlay in keeping up the extensive establishment at Stanley House.
