THE GENERAL ELECTION.
BIBLE IN THE SCHOOLS. QUESTION FOR CANDIDATE, [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] THAMES. Friday. A deputation representing tho Thamos Ministers' Association, Salvation Army and Women's Christian Temperance Union waited on Mr. A. M. Samuel, M.P., Reform candidate for Thames, this week, with a request that he define his '' attitude on the Bible-in-schools question. The Rev. N. Rothershaw stated that tho local Bible-in-schools Committee, of which he was president, had been requested by its headquarters to put tho question to candidates in order that they might know whom to vote for. Other members of the deputation supported tho request. Mr. Samuel, in reply, stated that it had been inferred that the Bible-in-schools League would vote only for candidates favouring its proposals. In his opinion the churches should get together and evolve a scheme suitable to all factions and keep the question out of politics. It was unfair to put the responsibility for such a decision on members of Parliament. Compulsory adoption of tho measure at present suggested might easily result in sectarian strife capablo of dislocating tho system of education. In any case, religion should bo kept out of politics. On no account would bo break a pledge, which in this instance ho regretted would not allow him to support the bill, concluded Mr. Samuel. Mr. YVayno asked Mr. Samuel if ho would support tho bill if a compromise was made to suit all parties. Mr. Samuel said ho would be glad to support the bill if this could be arranged.
