WASHED OVERBOARD.
AUSTRALIA PETTY OFFICER.
DRAMATIC RESCUE IN STORM
Australian Press Association —United Service (Received August 13, 5.5 p.m.) MONTREAL, Aug. 12. On the voyage of the Commonwealth Cruiser Australia from Portsmouth to Montreal a petty officer was washed overboard in a storm. The sea was too rough for a lifeboat to be launched. The Cruiser circled about arid a sailor was lowered down a "Jacob's ladder." He then steered alongside the swimming man who caught hold of the lower rung of the ladder. Assisted by another petty officer with a line, he was eventually rescued.
