TRAMS IN QUEEN STREET.
NO STOP AT VULCAN LANE. REMOVAL OF SAFETY ZONE. The outward tram stop at the intersection of Queen Street and Vulcan Lane was abolished yesterday and the safety zone was removed. Unsuspecting passengers stepped from the kerb to find that trams no longer paused at the accustomed stop. The fact that Vulcan Lane is in process of being widened from 16£ ft. to 32£ ft. sealed the fate of the zone, especially as owners aro anxious to take advantage of the improved access. Mr. J. A. C. A Hum, chairman of the Tramways Committee of the City Council, said yesterday it was not practicable to reinstate the zone a little higher along Queen Street owing to the Wyndham Street intersection. Ho indicated it was not intended to restore the stop, but any question of ■its readjustment would receive careful consideration ,if any inconvenience was caused, which he doubted. There is now no outward tram slop between Shortland and Victoria Streets.
