WAIKATO WINTER SHOW.
KEEN PUBLIC INTEREST. CROWDED SPECIAL TRAINS. THE ROOT CROPS EXHIBITS. GREAT PRAISE BY EXPERTS. [BY TELEGEAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. J HAMILTON, Wednesday. Exceptionally large crowds are attending the Waikato Winter Show, and the town is thronged with visitors. About 220 farmers and their families arrived from Pukekohe to-day in a special train arranged by the Franklin Agricultural and Pastoral Association, while over 1000 people travelled to Hamilton on a special train from Putaruru. In spite of the bad weather yesterday the attendance was a record, the gate takings totalling £2lO, compared with £195 on the first day last year, when fine weather prevailed. Good weather is being experienced to-day. Owing to the lack ui space in the show buildings the school children's singing competitions are being held in the Strand Theatre. There are large entries, and some excellent performances have been given. Fertility of the Waikato. Visitors to the show are greatly interested in the root crops and garden produce on view. When the dry weather experienced in the early part of the year is taken into account, the fertility of the Waikato, as demonstrated in the mangels, turnips, pumpkins and cereals on view is remarkable. Experts who hava acted as judges of root crops at shows stated today that the mangels and turnips displayed are among the best they have ever seen. The show, they said, had taught exhibitors how to select samples of their crops, and the result was that exhibits of uniform size and a high standard of quality were placed on view. This remark applied particularly to potatoes, onions and other vegetables. Long red mangels, 2ft. 6in. in length, and weighing 451b., huge turnips, and mammoth pumpkins over 1001b. in weight, were exhibited in large numbers. A curious exhibit made by Mr. J. Ballard is a freak growth consisting of five marrows attached to one stem. In the agricultural section, the F. M. Winstone Gold Cup valued at 100 guineas for six swedes, any variety, was awarded to the Piri Land Company. Additional Awards. Additional awards are:— ART SECTION. Chip Carving.—M. G. Wilson, 1; C. T.
