SUCCESSFUL CONTRACTORS PAYMENT OF £IO,OOO DENIED. LONDON OFFICE EMPHATIC. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. LONDON, May 14. The London newspapers give prominence to the allegations of corruption during the Labour regime in Sydney civic affairs made before the Royal Commission which is now investigating the matter of the municipal power-house contract. The Daily Chronicle informed the London representatives of Babcock and Wilcox, Limited, of the nature of cabled statements.
The deputy-general manager of the firm promptly denied the allegation of bribery. He said: " This is the first we have heard of it. I shall cable to our Sydney manager for full details. Meanwhile, lam glad the public can have our emphatic denial. We have never done anything of the sort, either in Australia or anywhere else. There must be some mistake. " It is true we secured the contract and are now fulfilling it, but it is not true that we paid anyone £IO,OOO for it. That is not our method of doing business. 1 take the most serious view of the allegation, and shall take np" the-matter immediately.
