CITY LOAN PROPOSALS.
BATHS AT POINT CHEVALIER. OTHER POOLS TO BE IMPROVED. GARAGE FOR COUNCIL MOTORS.
Three loan proposals, involving the raising of £42,000, ate under consideration by the City Council, and the question of seeking the approval of the Local Government Loans Board to the projects, prior to taking a poll of the ratepayers, will be decided at the council meeting on May 24. Following its expressed willingness to seek the approval of the ratepayers to provide swimming baths at Point Chevalier, it is proposed that £22,500 should be raised. That sum, in addition to paying for the cost of erecting the baths, provides for the installation of filtration and sterilisation plants to ensure the purity of the water. Recent uneasiness concerning the state of the water at the present baths controlled by the council, resulting in the closing of the Parnell baths toward the end of the season, finds a sequel in the further proposal to borrow £7500 for the purpose of installing filtration and sterilisation plants at the Parnell and Shelly Beach baths. Out of the same loan money, it is proposed to extend the intake pipe at the tepid baths in Hobson Street.
Another proposed application for the sanction of a loan involves the raising of £12,000 for the erection of a garage at the corner of Cook and Albert Streets for the housing of the council's motorcars. The plans provide for quarters for two married employees, and for three shops on the Albert Street frontage. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, said yesterday that, if the applications are sanctioned by the Loans Board, the proposals will be submitted as three separate issues to the ratepayers.
