MANUKAU COUNTY WORKS.

BRIDGE LOAN TO BE RAISED.

The Manukau County Council met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. F. M. Waters, presiding. The condition of bridges in the Wairoa riding was the most important matter dealt with in tho engineer's report. It was stated the issue of authority for the construction of the new bridge over the Piro Stream was likely to be considerably delayed. A survey showed tho proposed bridge would be partly off the legal line of road, and it would be necessary to acquire a small piece of land to widen tho road. Tho property, 18 perches in area, was part of a native holding owned by 11 persons, and would probably have to be taken under the Public Works Act, which was a tedious process. The old timber bridge known as the Tourist Bridge had developed signs of wholesale decay, which was affecting the stability of the structure, and could not be remedied by repairs. Tho bridge might carry limited loads for an indefinite period, or it might be necessary to put it out of commission at short notice.

Mr. J. Luke moved that a bridge loan for the Wairoa riding should be raised, the amount to be fixed according to requirements. The motion was carried.

A recommendation from the engineer that the price of all scoria from the East Tamaki pit should be increased by 6d a yard was adopted. It was stated the council had been losing money arid the services of two men had been required at the pit latterly. The, inspector reported that 18 building permits had been granted, involving £3659. The largest amount had been expended in the Wairoa riding, whero buildings, alterations and additions to the value of £1557 had been carried out. He recommended that a, by-law should Vie. framed (o make if. compulsory for all outside doors of public halls and churches to open outward.
