POLICE COURT NEWS.
IDLE AND DISORDERLY. LABOURER SENT TO PRISON.
With only a penny in his pocket, Daniel Keane, aged 48, labourer, who had no home, appeared in the Police Court yesterday charged with being idle and disorderly. It was said accused had no means of support and that he slept on a bed made of papers.
"He is a bad sneak thief and this class of man is a menace to society," said Senior-Sergeant Cummings. "Once he worked, but then he thought the wages were too low and so he left.'/
"Gaol is the only place for him," said the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, in sentencing Keane to three months' imprisonment.
"Lies; more lies!" cried Henry Gibson Hoey, aged 53, orchardist, charged with assaulting Sergeant Brown, of Devonport, when Senior-Sergeant Cummings said Hoey needed medical observation. "Arrest that man for perjury and brutal assault," shouted accused to the magistrate, pointing at the senior-sergeant. Accused was remanded to appear next week, and in the meantime he will be placed under observation.
Said to have 79 previous convictions against him, Edward Hall Alcock, aged 50, labourer, was charged with drunkenness and casting offensive matter in a tramcar in New North Road. On each count he was fined £2.
Charged with being idle and disorderly, Leonard Seymour Kinzett, aged 23, labourer, was remanded to appear next week. In the meantime accused will be placed under medical observation.
Charged with committing rape, a hairdresser, acred 26, married, whose name was suppressed, was remanded to appear next Tuesdav. Bail was allowed.
