AUCKLAND INSTITUTE.
MAORI RACE SECTIGN. The annual meeting of the anthropological and Maori race section of the Auckland Institute was held last evening, the chairman, Mr. W. Page Rowe, presiding. The annual report showed the past year had been most successful. The roll now stood at 46, and the financial statement showed a credit balance larger than had been recorded for some years. Mr. A. T. Pycroft moved a vote of thanks to the retiring chairman, Mr. Pago Rowe, on the occasion of his departure for England. Ho .said Mr. Rowe, by his investigations into Maori art, had'opened an untouched- field in the province of the section's researches, and had, ,bv. the; introduction of a new point of view, made an extremely valuable contribution to the work of the institute. His "Maori Artistry," recently issued by the Board of Maori Ethnological llosearch, revealed subjects for study that had not hitherto been touched upon. 1 •' Referring to the transfer to the new museum, Mr. Pycroft emphasised the need of instructional exhibits, such as modelled 'groups which showed exactly how weapons or tools were employed. He understood that expense was the chief difficulty. Mr. Gilbert Archey, curator of the museum, gavo an assurance that the value of instruction was being strongly emphasised in making plans for the laying-out of the museum. The following officers were elected: — Chairman, Mr. A. T. Pycroft;. honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr. V. F. Fisher; committee, Miss Olive Lloyd, Professor- Sperrin Johnston, Messrs. G. Archey, R. A. Falla and George Graham; honorary auditor, Mr. Ivo Esam.
