OPIATE IN MEDICINE.
EFFECT UPON DIAGNOSIS. STATEMENT AT INQUEST. [Br TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCF. Sunday. The use of opiates in medicines for infants was mentioned at an inq'iest concerning the death of a child, Aged six months, the son of an unemployed labourer. Dr. D. E. Currie suggested that in any new Poisons Act it should be compulsory for a chemist selling over the counter any medicine containing opium to see that the fact and the quantity was stated on the label. The cause of the child's illness was gastric enteritis, but he had been misled in his diagnosis by the effect of opium in the medicine supplied by a chemist. The coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.
