PETROL EXPLOSION.

EIGHT MEN KILLED. BRITISH STEAMER ON FIRE- * . CAPETOWN, Feb. 11. A terrible petrol explosion occurred on board the British steamer Homeford in Buffalo Harbour, East London, to-day. Eight men were killed. An immense sheet of flame rose above the ship, and vast quantities of metal and sugar were hurled great, distances. The crew fought the fire with the ship's equipment, and some thrilling acts of heroism, worthy of the best traditions of the mercantile marine, were witnessed. The flames were eventually got under control. The Homeford was a British mystery ship !h the' war. She was built in 1918 by Smith's Dock Company &t Middlesbro', and is owned by the Beadon Line.
