YOUTH LOST IN RIVER.
FATALITY IN WAIKATO. ATTEMPT AT RESCUE FAILS, [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] . HTJNTLY, Thursday. A sad fatality occurred yesterday ' at about 6.30 p.m., when Lawrence Wardell, aged 17 years, the youngest son of Mr. and Wardell, of Great South Road, Huntly, was drowned in the Waikato River. The deceased, in- company with some other boys, was making an attempt to swim out to a sand bank in the middle of the stream, but on returning apparently became overcome with an attack of cramp, and Boon was to be in difficulties. Tom. Gillings, a cousin of deceased, came to his assistance and held him up in the water for a considerable time, but became exhausted and had to loosen his bold. He called out for help, but before further assistance conld be given deceased had disappeared. The police were soon notified, and Constable Robertson with several helpers commenced to drag the river, until it was dark. Further dragging operations were undertaken this morning, while launches searched the river in the vicinity of the accident, but without result.
