RUSSIAN COMPETITION. (Received February 23, 5.5' p.m.) A.' and N.Z. SYDNEY, Feb. 23. One of the factors of the keen competition and high prices at the Sydney wool sales, especially for the freer type of locks, is the .Russian demand.. Buyers from elsewhere are compelled to stretch their limits to the utmost to secure this class from the Russian buyers. The activity of the Russians, however, lias ijot been confined to locks. Of lafe. finer quality wools have benefited considerably from their activity. The advent of the Russians as direct buyers has certainly being an appreciable factor in keeping the rates at the present buoyant level. AUCKLAND COMPANIES. FOUR NEW REGISTRATIONS. The Admiralty has invited tenders for 944,0001b of canned corned beef. Tenders are returnable on April. 12 and final delivery must be made in December. • PUBLIC TRUST OFFICE. LAST MONTH'S BUSINESS. The following are particulars of the loan transactions of the Public Trust Office and new bqsiness reported during the month ended January 31;— The amount paid out in settlement of new loans was £80,603, making a total of £2,153,472 since the beginning of the present financial year on April 1 last. Further new loans to the amount of £57,620 were granted,, making the .total of new loans awaiting settlement £627,344. while offers of loans less than the full advances applied for amount to. £167,903 — a grand total of £795,237. Applications for additional new loans amounting to £434,316 are now under consideration. The new business for the month was extraordinarily good and its volume has not previously been equalled. Estates and funds were reported to the value of £854,483, making the total new business for the ten months from April 1, £5,409,535. A little clean common tea was offered at about half an anna cheaper than at the previous, sale. Brokem Pekoes realised 12 anrias 6 pies, and broken Souchong about 11 Dusts were rather easier.
