MARKET MORE ACTIVE.

Business was brighter on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday. Most of the Government War Loans were in demand and although there was not the same inquiry for Inscribed Stocks transactions were made in the latter section, the 1938 and 1939 4£ per cents, selling at £97 ss, the current rate. More were wanted at 2s 6d less, but sellers withdrew from the market. In local budy debentures, Auckland Harbour Board, 1937, 5i per cent., sold at £96, a decline of 5s on the price paid last month, and of £1 on that paid last November. An unusual ovent since tho resumption of business after the holidays was the closing of the market without any sales being recorded in the bank section, which, with Government securities, has been the most active recently. Buyers were in the market for most of the popular shares. Commercials of Australia were wanted at 27s sd, sellers casing a'shade to 27s 'Bd. Nationals of ,New Zealand were steady at the current rates of £7 and £6 18s. New South Wales, at £4B, had offers of 10s "less. New Zealand sellers were steady at 59s 3d, buyers increasing their oilers during the day from 58s 6d to 58s 9d. Holders of Union of Australian reduced their quotations 2s to £l4 15s, without attracting offers. In insurance, buyers offered 40s 9d for New Zealands, without response. South British were steady at 58s and 57s 6d. In gas Aucklands sold at 22s 4d, an increase of Id, and more were available at the game price, buyers 22s 3d. There was firm inquiry for the contributing issue at 16s 4d, .sellers'holding out for 16s 9d; In shipping Northerns changed hands at the current price of 15s, and more wore wanted at the -same figure at the mid-day call. Sellers and buyers withdrew in the afternoon. In miscellaneous Colonial Sugars were sought at £56, sellers not quoting. LONDON TALLOW SALES. A. and N.Z.-Sun, LONDON, Feb. 22. At the London tallow sales to-day 888 casks wore offered and 454 pold at 6d decline. Mutton: Fine, 445; medium, 35s 6d. Beef: Fine, 40s; rnediom, 35s 6d. Dal got y and Company Limited, have received the following cablegram from their London house, 'dated February 22:—Tallow: 888 casks of tallow were offered and 33 per cent. sold. Prices are 6d lower.
