"BETWEEN YOU AND ME."

Sir, —Could you-find room to . correct a modern error that is steadily gaining currency in our everyday speech in all parts of New Zealand. The faulty expression to which 1 refer is specially noticeable in the conversation of our young students and teachers, who are naturally accepted as authorities by those who are in doubt, or those who were never taught the rules of English grammar. On occasions when: I have heard such remarks as "Between you and I, what is your opinion of so-and-so ?" or "Ted took Maud and I to the pictures last night," I have sometimes got as far as a mild protest, but no further, for I noticed that my hearers considered it polite to gloss over my apparrent ignorance by "not hearing" my remark, and in the" mental atmosphere I saw the words writ large—"oldfashioned," "out of date." On one occasion my friend replied "Oh, 'vou and I' is correct in every case. When you are speaking of yourself and another person you should never use 'me,' " and with a patronising smile she changed the subject. (This lady was a teacher!) SUBSCRIBER.
