PENALTY OF THIRTY POUNDS. COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NGARUAWAHIA, Thursday. A plea of guilty was entered by W. Ambler, a local farmer, when charged in the Police Court to-day. Counsel explained that accused was only a "silver" bettor. A fine of £3O was imposed. On defendant declining to state his bank balance, the magistrate, Mr. Wyvern Wilson, refused to grant an application for time in which to pay the fine. He said bookmakers were parasites, and the cause of much trouble to tho community.
