AUCKLAND WEEKLY NEWS.

TO-DAY'S ILLUSTRATIONS. MANY SPLENDID FEATURES. The large and attractive pictorial section published in to-day's issue of the Auckland Weekly News is well up to the remarkably high standard which has earned for the journal a world-wide reputation, and established it as Now Zealand's acknowledged national illustrated newspaper. An outstanding feature this week is a striking series of photographs secured at the regatta on the Wanganui River. The river city's aquatic carnival was unique in that the large Maori war canoes, which are now seldom seen, were brought out in force to take part in special events. All that was best in a most spectacular programme of great historic interest has been recorded by special Weekly News photographers, and has been excellently reproduced. It forms a very fine pic,t orial record of a passing phase of Maori life, and thousands of readers will want to preserve the pictures. In add.ition are remarkably good photographs of the New Zealand speed-boat championships, which were decided on the Wanganui River on the same day. Of great general interest arc two very fine pages devoted to splendid snapshots illustrating the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy at work. They were secured by special permission of Commodore Swa'bev during last week's battle practice in Hauraki Gulf, and the exciting mimic- warfare carried out by largo landing parties at Waiwera when the village Wc.s defended by detachments of Royal Marines. Interesting pictures, too, are those depicting the tragic fate of the liner Clan MacWilham, which caught fire at Vava'u, and plunged to its doom in 25 fathoms of water before the captain and chief engineer could escape Arapuni's wonderful spectacle, the cataract created below the spillway by the diversion of the Waikato River to the head-race, is the subject of a striking halfpage plate that will rivet the attention of all. Further miscellaneous subjects front all parts olf the Dominion are many and varied. The following are perhaps outstanding:—Concluding days of the Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting; presentation of colours by General Young to the Ist Battalion of the Wellington West Coast Regiment; devastating bush fires in the Waikato and Nelson district; tourist parties in the Southern Alps; summer's call to the seaside; the Dominion school teachers' summer conference at Nelson; the passing of the last of the Norse wood horse coaches; Australian golfers who won the Kirk-Windeyer Cup and the reign of terror in China.
