THE SOCIETY OF ARTS:

MEMBERSHIP QUESTION. AN INCREASE DESIRABLE. The annual report of the Auckland Society of Arts records a small increase in membership during the year ended July 31, the total being 774, against 369 in the previous year. Both these totals, however, compare unfavourably with the years 1924-25 and 1923-24, when the membership was 417 and 390 respectively. In noting the decline, the report states that the decrease in honorary members is a serious matter because the society's income Is chiefly derived from this source. A city of Auckland's size should have an honorary list of at least 500 if the society is to function satisfactorily. The report shows that honorary members number 228, or 40 less than two years ago, while working members number 146, against 149 in 1924-25. The proceeds of the sale of the society's premises in Kitchener Street, £8875, are being invested and the income will be allowed to accumulate as a building fund.

The statement of accounts shows that there was a loss of £l2 10s 5d on gen eral income account and of £BB on the annual exhibition. The latter was due in large measure to reducing the price of admission and of the catalogue from Is to 6d. These concessions were not. -e----flected in increased attendance, or in any appreciable increase in the sale of catalogues. ' The annual meeting will be held on September 22.
