MAORI HYGIENE WORK.

LOCATION OF HEADQUARTERS

THE TRANSFER IN ABEYANCE. FURTHER INQUIRY TO BE MADE. [BY TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL REPORTER.] WELLINGTON. Wednesday The transfer of the headquarters of the Director of Maori Hygiene, Dr. E. P. Ellison, from Auckland to Wellington, is being held in abeyance. Although it had been decided that the transfer should bo made, inquiry is to be made by the director as to the most suitable centre from which to conduct the operations of the division, and pending receipt of his recornmendatiojj it is understood no further action will be taken in carrying out tho change. Approached on the subject oi the protests made in Auckland against the transfer, the Minister of Health, Hon. J. A. Young, said to-day he had no comment to make at the moment.

I'he division of Maori hygiene comes under the Health Department, and it is understood to be tho view of that department that since the greater part of the administrative side of the division's worlc mustr pass through its hands, more speedy and ellicient working would be obtained by having the office of the director near headquarters. On the other hand, the view of those intimately concerned with the welfare of the Maoris is that the oflice should be located near the centre of the native population. It is believed the conflicting interests will be overcome by tjie further inquiries which are to be made by Dr. Ellison, in whose capacity all sides have great faith, and whose work there is a unanimous desire to assist.
