SCHOOL AT HOSPITAL.

APPRECIATION OF THE WORK. THE .STATUS OF THE TEACHER. Objection to the views of the Education Department with regard to schools at hospitals was made at a meeting.of the Auckland Education Board yesterday. The department notified that it was opposed to the constituting of hospital schools as separate schools, the circumstances of their establishment being exceptional and the teacher not having the same responsibility as the teacher of .'an ordinary school. Referring to the status and salary of the teacher at the Auckland Hospital school, the department Stated an appointment to the position of head teacher could not be made without calling' for .applications and submitting the position for competition in the usual way. The chaiiinari, Mr. A. Burns, said the board was asking that the teacher should be placed /on the same level as the teachers of schools of the same size. He considered she- had more responsibility than ordinary teachers. Several of the children had obtained proficiency from the .' school, which he considered was wonderful. ' Mr. H. & W. King said the teacher .Was doing excellent work both in an educational' respect and in assisting in bringing children back to health. It .was hot' an ordinary position, but one Winch called for special instruction. ,It was suggested the medical superintendent of the.hospital should be asked to furnish a report as to the relation of the school to the health of the children. The secretary, Mr. E. C. Purdie, said the Hospital Board had offered to pay the teacher's salary, but it had been ascertained that this could not legally fce done. . >.. ' It was decided to protest strongly to the department with regard to tha view It' had taken up.
