The New Zealander evaded a number of wild rushes cleverly, but was almost knocked out by a terrific right to the jaw in the second round. In the next round Purdy attacked and scored well with lefts to the body, but another right to the head steadied him, and he was compelled to clinch. For the next six x-ounds Purdy stemmed vicious attacks from the American with a succession of lefts to the face, but in the next round the New Zealander was badly punished.
