WOMAN SWIMMER FAILS

CHANNEL NEARLY CROSSED. MRS. CORSON'S FINE ATTEMPT. (Received September 7, 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. LONDON, Sept. 6. Mrs. Corson, who swam the Channel on August 28 last year, abandoned a splendid attempt to cross to-day from Dover when she was four miles from Cape GrisneZj after being in the watei for nine hours and 36 minutes. She left the South Foreland about 9 a.m. and was taken from the water at 6.36 p.m., shivering and exhausted. The swimmer was beaten by the cold water. She started under most favourable conditions. At first she was twice attacked with sickness, but recovered, and then made splendid progress in spite of a freshening breeze and rough soa. Later the temperature dropped suddenly and Mrs. Corson complained of the cold and began to cry. Although the French coast was well in sight her pilot and trainer decided that it was useless to carry on as the tide was taking her down Channel.' It was a bitter defeat, as Mrs. Corson had previously accomplished the swim in the opposite direction. «

Mrs. Mille Gade Corson, who is a Danish American, a i married woman with two children, swam the Channel last year from Franco in 15h. 28m. She went to Deal in June last with her two children, Sonnie, aged four, and Marjorie, aged two, to train for another attempt. Her pilot was Captain Harry Pearson, of Walmer, Kent, and her trainer, W. Kellingley, of Deal.
