RANGITOTO ISLAND.

RAVAGES OF THE DEER. STEPS TO REMEDY TROUBLE. Wild deer continue to damage young trees and undergrowth on Rangitoto, according to the report of the engineer to the Devonport Borough Council last evening. The engineer said he had been told by trappers on the island that the deer were numerous, as many as 20 in one herd having been seen. . They had been doing a great deal of damage. The Akarana Maori Association wrote asking the council, which functions as the Rangitoto Domain Board, to do all in its power to protect gative flora and fauna on the island. Authority was given persons to take deer off the island, subject to certain conditions. The Superintendent of Prisons advised that in future trees would not be cut down and used for firewood. It was decided to take steps to exterminate the deer on the island.
