SUBURBAN DRAINAGE.

MOUNT ROSKILL POSITION. A reply to a recent statement by the chairman of the Auckland and Suburban Drainagd Board, on the subject of drainage in the Mount Roskill district, was made by Mr. L. A. Tozer at the meeting of the Road Board this week. Mr Tozer said the statement gave the impression that the road bqard had done little or nothing toward draining its own district. In October, 1923, authority had been given for No. 8 sewer to be extended to the boundary of Mount Eden and Mount Roskill, in order to drive a certain part of the western area. Although four years had elapsed, the sewer was not yet near the boundary, and consequently nothing could be_ done toward draining the Mount Roskill "area. In the following year the Drainage Board agreed to part of the area coming within its jurisdiction, stipulating certain conditions, and these the road board agreed to. However, up to now the roadl ooard had not received these conditions for execution. In December, 1935, the Drainage Board's engineer circulated a report which included the statement that the area was not yet in the drainage area, but that negotiations were proceeding! The Drainage Board's engineer was not yet able to advise the road board of the level of the inlet of the sewer at the boundary, and until this was done estimates could not be prepared for submission to the ratepayers, whereas this disability should not prevent the Drainage Board from extending the sewer and making the necessary survey. Mr. Tozer emphasised the seriousness of the position if the poll were rejected, but in the interests of the residents of Mount Albert and Edendale the .scheme would have to be validated by the Health Act. It was therefore manifest that the road board had done everything within its power and any delay had been on the part of the Drainage Board.
