AMATEUR BILLIARDS.

AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. SECOND ROUND COMMENCED. The first game of the second round of the Auckland provincial championship for the Billiards, Limited, Shield was played last evening. The contestants were M. D. of the shield, and A. Massey. There was a large attendance, including many jadies. Both jlayers started confidently. White went oft with the lead and reached the first hundred with a small margin to the good. He then increased his lead considerably with breaks of 49, 34 and 42 in consecutive cues. Massey responded with runs of 39 and 25. White continued to force the play and. taking advantage of good leaves, he gradually increased his lead. When game was called he was over 200 points to the good. _ . Massey played well when opportunities arose, but White, who excelß on the halfball shot, proved too consistent, .and he averaged over 11 points a cue. This is the highest average in the tournament so far. He should bo the hardest player to defeat, as in addition to being an excellent player, he possesses the right temperament for matches. The final scores were:—White, 500; breaks of 20, 30. 49. 34, 42. 41, 25, 23 and 44; average, 11.1. Massey, 267; breaks of 39, 25 and 27. The game this evening will be between E. J. Morrison and C. A.
