HAULING-UP AREAS.

.YACHTS' WINTER QUARTERS.

I PROVISION AT COX'S BAY. Ample provision for hauling-up areas for pleasure craft has been made at Cox's Bay, said Mr. T. L. Thompson, commodore of the Richmond Cruising Club, in. commenting on the loss of suitable areas in the vicinity of the city owing to /the land being required for commercial purposes. Mr. Thompson explained that in 1889 the portion of Cox's Creek inside the bridge, comprising 28 acres, was vested by the Marine Department in the Grey Lynn Borough Council as a park for recreation purposes. In 1913 the department granted the fee simple of the area known as Cox's Bay, outside the bridge, and bounded by Hellaby's Point and Herne Bay Point, to be vested in the Grey Lynn Borough Council for all time as a boat harbour, hauling-out sites for yachts and launches, and swimming baths. This area comprises 32 acres. Mr. Thompson, who was then a member of the council, said the policy was to utilise the spoil from the area to reclaim the park inside the bridge. The idea was to dredge out a deep channel in Cox's Bay and thus reclaim the ftisida area, which could be used for football, cricket and other recreations. With the amalgamation of Grey Lynn with the city in 1914 the area was automatically vested in the City Council. 'As the Auckland Harbour Board has no jurisdiction over the area, there is no danger of its being reclaimed for commercial purposes," added Mr. Thompson, i "The city engineer, Mr. W. E. Bush, recently. recommended that half the area inside the bridge, about 10 acres, should be reclaimed. At the present time about j 40 boats are hauled up there in winter quarters, the majority belonging to the Richmond Club." j
