FINANCES OF THE BOROUGH. A SATISFACTORY POSITION. EARLY PAYMENT OF RATES. Ths Takapuna Borough Council met last overling, the Mayor, Mr. J. \V. Williamson. presiding. The current year's rates had been struck at £43,750, and £21,534 14s 4d had been collected. The total collection of arrears of rates amounted to £1717 5s 3d. # . The Milford Progressive Association urged the council to take steps to acquire Smith's Bush as a public reserve. It }vas decided that members of the council and influential residents should wait on the Government in an attempt to induce it" to purchase the property as a scenic reserve. Mr. A. H. Wilkie asked the council to make an early start with urgent sewerage undertakings in order to provide work for unemployed ex-servicemen. The Mayor said the matter was under consideration. • Mr. A. Harris, M.P.. advised that the Post and Telegraph Department would erect public telephone boxes at the corners of Lake and Jutland Roads, Kitchener and Milford Roads, the Strand and Lake Road, and the Behr.cnt corner and the Post Office. A request from the Waitemata County Council for a contribution toward the cost of completing the metalling of the Silver-dale-Redvale Road was refused. The County Council estimated the cost at £4OOO.
