FINANCES OF THE BOROUGH. A SATISFACTORY POSITION. EARLY PAYMENT OF RATES. Ths Takapuna Borough Council met last overling, the Mayor, Mr. J. \V. Williamson. presiding. " The figures produced are highly satisfactory," said the Mayor, when a statement on borough finance was brought forward. The town clerk stated the debit balance at July 31 was £11,794 8s lOd, but by August 31 this had been converted to a credit balance of £2529 18s 6d. Allowance had been made for various charges amounting to £7601 3s lOd. The bank overdraft was paid off on August 29. The wisdom in allowing a 5 per cent, rebate on rates was again borne out by the fact that during August £22,165 8s 9d had been collected, including £740 4s 3d in arrears. A rebate amounting to £lll3 18s 9d was allowed, and the total rate collection to date amounted to £23,251 19s 7d. The current year's rates had been struck at £43,750, and £21,534 14s 4d had been collected. The total collection of arrears of rates amounted to £1717 5s 3d. # . The Milford Progressive Association urged the council to take steps to acquire Smith's Bush as a public reserve. It }vas decided that members of the council and influential residents should wait on the Government in an attempt to induce it" to purchase the property as a scenic reserve. Mr. A. H. Wilkie asked the council to make an early start with urgent sewerage undertakings in order to provide work for unemployed ex-servicemen. The Mayor said the matter was under consideration. • Mr. A. Harris, M.P.. advised that the Post and Telegraph Department would erect public telephone boxes at the corners of Lake and Jutland Roads, Kitchener and Milford Roads, the Strand and Lake Road, and the Behr.cnt corner and the Post Office. A request from the Waitemata County Council for a contribution toward the cost of completing the metalling of the Silver-dale-Redvale Road was refused. The County Council estimated the cost at £4OOO.
