COMMERCIAL INSTRUCTION. j TEACHING IN HIGH SCHOOLS. The Auckland Education Board met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. A. Burns, presiding. The proposal to construct a culvert at the foot of the Newton Central School ground was referred to in a letter from the Education Department. It was stated tho Railway Department was unable to say definitely on which side of the gully the line would be taken until the completion of the full survey of the proposed line. The chairman said funds were in hand for ground improvements, but it was not advisable to do anything until it was known where the railway line was going. It was decided to write to the Railway Department asking for definite information.

The Te Kuiti School Committee urged tho establishment of classes for commercial instruction in district high schools. It was decided to ask the department whether it was possible to set up the classes next year. The question of establishing a library for teachers was raised by a lettei from the department, which stated although it recognised the need of a library at the Training College, it would not be advisable to circulate books among the general body of teachers. It»was decided to confer with the Director of Education on bis forthcoming visit to Auckland. The department notified that in view of the present slate of public finance, proposals subsidiary to those for actual school accommodation would have to he postponed. It had therefore been decided that it could hold itself liable for only twothirds of the cost of furniture for teachers' rooms in schools, the balance having to he found' locally.
