DAMAGE TO TELEPHONES.
PROPERTY OF TAXI FIRM. MANY FALSE CALLS GIVEN. A complaint that a number of acts of mischief had been committed recently upon property of the Checker Taxi Cab Company was made yesterday by the secretary, Mr. A. Sinclair. ■ Mr. Sinclair said that to facilitate the despatch of cabs the company recently established 60 miles of private telephone wire, and private telephone boxes in Quay tStreet and Symonds Street. On Friday evening the lock of the door of the Quay Street box was stuffed with wood in such a way that it had to be forced open. On the following night tlio performance was repeated and on Monday night the wires were torn down. On Sunday night the lock of the Symonds Street, door was broken and on Monday the door was nailed up. In addition innumerable false calls for cabs were received on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Most of these had requested that cabs should be sent to the steamer Marama and had apparently been designed to draw cabs from the Quay Street stand. They had been traced to slot telephone boxes. The company had had similar trouble two years ago when tjie tyres of the cabs had been slashed.
