KNOCKED DOWN BY CYCLE.
FATALITY AT WH ANGAREI. VERDICT OF ACCIDENTAL DEATH [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. 1 WHANGAREI. Wednesday The adjourned inquest concerning the death of William Arthur Frood, who died of injuries after being knocked down by a motor-cyclist on Kamo Road, on August 2, was concluded to-day before Mr. L. J. Brake, acting-coroner, and a jury of four. Sydney Cuthbert Withers, machinist, said he- was riding up Kamo Road on the night of the accident with Ronald William Tobin as a pillion passenger. He noticed the shadow of a man, apparently riding a bicycle, in the shade of some tall trees. When 10ft. away he saw it was a man on foot, and shouted a warning. He swung further to his left, but the pedestrian stepped back toward the kerb, and the running board of the cycle struck him. Witness fell from his machine. The pillion rider had been thrown previously. When witness got to his feet he saw a man lying unconscious on the road. He was removed to hospital in that condition. Dr. Hall, medical superintendent at Whangarei Hospital, said death was due to cerebral oedema. Falling heavily on *tho bitumen road would cause such injuries. Further evidence was given that the spot where the accident occurred was very dark. A verdict was returned that deceased met his death from injuries received by being accidentally knocked down by a motor-cycle.
