MEMORIAL IN FRANCE.
EMPIRE'S NOBLE DEAD. CROSS NEAR YPRES UNVEILED. A. and N.Z. - Sun. PARIS, June 19. A memorial Cross of Sacrifice erected at the Tynecot cemetery, near Ypres, was unveiled to-day by Mr. Gilbert Dyett, chairman of the British Empire League. The cross was erected in memory of 35,000 of tho Empire's soldiers who were killed in the later actions in the Ypres salient, many of whom have no known graves. The nucleus of tho cemetery is comprised of a few battle graves round the highest of the several concreto German blockhouses, tho centre of the heaviest fighting. Over these tho cross stands. Tho wall which surrounds tho graves contains a war-stone on which is the inscription: "Their name liveth for overmore." There are also panels in the wall which bear the names of the dead. These supplement tho names inscribed on tho Menin Gate. A small semi-circular apse is consocrated to New Zealand's dead. Those present at tho ceremony included members of the Empire Service League, tho Burgomasters of Passchendaelo and Zonnebeke and many of the inhabitants. The Rev. F. Molyneux blessed the cross and buglers sounded " The Last Post and " The Reveille." Tho identified graves in the cemetery include those of five men who won the Victoria Cross, also of 1344 Australians and 508 New Zealanders. The apse is inscribed with the names of 1179 New Zoalanders who fell in the Battle of Rroodseindo and tho first Battle of Passchendaele. Tho graves bear the inscription: " Known only unto God."
