HOSPITALS IN WAIKATO.
ACTIVITIES DURING YEAR. FEWER DIPHTHERIA CASES. [BX TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON. Thursday. The Waikato Hospital Board met today, Mr. Campbell Johnstone presiding. Correspondence from the Department of Health stated that the Minister had approved the estimates for the year 192728, and that the maintenance subsidy would be at the rate of 16s 9d in the £. The suggestion that an officer of the Mental Hospitals Department consult with the medical superintendent on cases of incipient mental instability at the Waikato Hospital was agreed to. , The Hamilton Borough Council wrote protesting against the growing tendency to erect cottage hospitals'in the board's district. The medical superintendent's annual report showed that the number of patients treated during the year was 3069, compared with 2626 for the previous year. The average daily number of patients in hospital was 198, as against 206 for the previous year, and the average length of stay in hospital was 25.j days, as compared with 28£ days. The total number of operations performed was 1417. There were no deaths under anaesthetics. The deaths during the year were 156, of which number 30 occurred within 24 horns of admission. In addition to 189 cases of fracture treated, there were 121 cases of injuries due to accidents. A further reduction in cases of diphtheria was recorded, the figures for this year being 24, compared with 40 last year. The X-ray department carried out 1319 examinations during the year. . Cases admitted at the branch hospitals were Huntly, 80; Matamata. 104; Kawhia, 39; Old Men's Home, 36.
