ACCLIMATISATION AFFAIRS.
PURCHASE OF PHEASANTS. SUM ALLOCATED FOR SEASON. The council of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society met last evening, the chairman, Mr. C. A. Whitney, presiding. Mr. J. Knight moved that the council's decision not to buy pheasants from private breeders and to place orders with three approved breeders be rescinded. He suggested the matter should be left open in order to avoid the creation of a monopoly and to encourage breeding as a hobby and as an industry. Mr. Knight contended that tho private breeding of pheasants promoted interest in the welfare of the birds and discouraged poaching. It was decided to purchase up to £IOOO worth of pheasants and to invite breeders to submit tenders. The Waimarino and Opotiki Societies wrote supporting the society's resolution expressing the opinion that the fees for whole season Taupo licences were inequitable and should be replaced by an annual fee of 30s.
