MOTOR-CAR INDUSTRY.
NEEDS OF THE DOMINIONS. BRITISH DELEGATION'S VISIT. The importance of cheap and efficient means of transport in Empire development was emphasised yesterday by Sir I Archibald Boyd-Carpenter, head of the British Motor Delegation, in an address at a luncheon given to the members of the delegation by the Auckland Automobile Association. The president, Dr. J. H. Lawry, presided. Mr. G. W. Hutchison, secretary of the association, said it was most essential that the British system of taxation on horse-power should be abolished, as it had an important bearing upon the typo of car manufactured and imported into New Zealand. Low-powered cars were not suitable for use in the Dominions. It was a strange thing that when he was in England he had been recommended to tour the country in a French car by nn official of the Automobile Association, and when he asked for advice in choosing a car to bring back with him ho was told a certain American car was a good model (Laughter.) Mr. 3L If- Wynyard, a member of the Main Highways Board, welcomed TBKmkfKn of- the delegation, and explained to them the coostitntion of the board I scd i'ji work. ! Ssf AirMhuM, in reply, said their purj xm*. to mnnht into complaints con- | eerßzog types of British cars in the Dowmxa., Cheap and easy means of transport ta New Zealand were essential, and sf thzi could provided he believed it would go a long way toward solving the problem of Empire development. The queatkm mi also important from the point of view of defence, and they would be vesry foolish to ignore such matters. Whatever information the delegation gathered would be handed to those in England who were in a position to remedy defect# and provide for the future. The members of the delegation will leave for Botoroa by car early thus morning, and will continue the journey to Napier bv road to-morrow. From Napier they will'go to Wellington, where three days will be spent before visiting the South Island.
