RACING CARNIVAL ENDS.

THE AUCKLAND MEETING. WINTER STEEPLES CONTEST. SURPRISE VICTORY FOR TUKI. MASTER DOON'S-YORK HANDICAP. The Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting was concluded yesterday. With rain pelting down steadily during almost the whole of the preceding day and a low barometer ruling, it seemed very much as though racegoers would have to take their outing at Ellerslie under wet weather conditions, but though matters were still in the doubtful state at ten o'clock yesterday morning, the sun came out brightly as tho day advanced, and the gathering passed off under most pleasant conditions. The attendance was estimated at 12,500, which is well up to tha best record on the corresponding days of previous winter meetings. From first to last the proceedings were marked with a spirit characteristic of an Ellerslia gathering, and altogether the season on the IA.R.C. ground was concluded in a manner every way fitting to the surroundings Several horses fell during the jumping contests, but fortunately nono of th<* riders was seriously hurt. S. Henderson, however, suffered a shaking as the result of his fall when Beau Cavalier cami> down, and C. Taggart, rider of Comical, had a collarbone injured. Henderson was to have ridden Archibald in the Campbell Hurdle Race, but he had to forgo tho engagement. The Judicial Committee was summoned lo consider a protest lodged against Zircon being declared tho winner of the Tamaki Steeplechase, on the grounds that he came over on Pendavies in the closing stage of the contest, but after an inquiry thi3 was disallowed. Tho committee also held an inquiry into some interference that King Lu suffered in the Visitors' Handicap, but after hearing evidence no further action waß considered necessary. The totalisator investments during tho day amounted to £59,943 10s, against £72,034 10s on the corresponding day last, year. The grand total for the meeting was £226,179, compared with £242,322 10s last year, a decrease of £16,143 10s. Zircon's First Oross-Country Win. The first event to which backers had to direct their attention was the Tamaki Steeplechase, for which Zircon was installed favourite, with Pendavies most fancied of the others. The summing up in favour of the two_ chestnut geldings ■worked out quite accurately, as Zircon and Pendavies fought out the finish for tho leading position. Pendavies filled the role of pacemaker and when he combated a strong challenge on the part of Zircon three fences from home and led his opponent three lengths at the stonewall, it looked as though the favourite would suffer defeat, Zircon was, however, topsides ■with his opponent at the last hurdle, and, Pendavies tiring, a length victory went down to th 9 credit of Zircon, who jumped throughout cleverly. The Orakci Hurdle Race attracted the good field of sixteen. Potoanui was made favourite, Just John and Kamehameha beiDg the others most strongly supported. Kamehameha and Potoanui raced stride for stride from the back stretch to the head of the straight, where Kamehameha drew away, and he had matters all his own way in the concluding stage. Kamehameha, who is one of the recent recruits, is a five-year-old gelding by Demosthenes from the Gold Reef mare Rangiao. Prior to winning yesterday, Kamehameha had only managed to win a couple of minor handicaps, but he shows aptitude for jumping, and maybe the future has something more in storp for bim. Master Boon Triumphs. 'A fine field of 21 was saddled up to Contest the York. Handicap, and when backers got to work they made Llandudno favourite, and of the others Master Doon was the one most in demand. After King Merv and Gala Day had each taken a turn in making the pace—the last-named showing the way up to the turn—Master Doon, who had never been further back than a close third, shot through; and the son of Lucullus, finishing up his task in great style, ran home a winner three lengths in front of True Blood. Llan- . dudno, though hard ridden in the straight, failed to get near tho leaders, and he was sighted in fifth place passing the post. Of the field of thirteen coloured .on the card for the Winter Steeplechase Msunga •was the only withdrawal. Beau Cavalier Tvas tho one selected for favourite, and of the others Kawini, Royal Abbey and Omahu were the ones to claim more attention. When the first three-quarters of a mile had been reeled off Comical and Beau Cavalier were racing stride for strido and carrying tho field along at a slashing pace. Beau Cavalier made a faulty jump in negotiating the hurdle and fell. Comical went on to act the role of pacemaker, and when the big chestnut took the turn at the back stretch into a commanding advantage, he seemed at least sure of a place. The next obstacle —the hurdle by the six-furlong post—however, beat him. and ho went out of tho race by a very faulty jump. Tuki's Great Final Run. Kawini was thus left with the lead, Jmt Omahu was racing level with tfie Auckland gelding at the post and Tail fence. Kawini had the best of his Wangantii rival when the run down the hill came to be undertaken; and as he was well in front at the stone wall he looked like winner. A surprise, however, proved to be in store. A glance to the outside revealed Tuki finishing well, and the Dune-din-owned gelding, keeping up his run, Jiad Kawini beaten after crossing the last obstacle and he ran home an oasv winner. Tuki figured eighth in order ■of favouritism, and a solid dividend followed his victory. Llewellyn developed lameness during the race, and he did not complete the course. In the Campbell Hurdle Race Day Bell "tvas entrusted with most, support, Black 'Cruiser Archibald and Royal Form also being well fancied. The backers of Day Bell had not to wait long to recognise the unpalataLle fact that they had lost their money, for the favourite struck the third hurdle and unseated his rider. Archibald made the pace for a mile, when he surrendered to Royal Form, and the Royal Soult gelding, striding away, had matters all his own way over the concluding stage, winning comfortably from !Enaro. The Visitors' Handicap found a field of 16 paraded. Hoariri was made favourite and he justified the confidence by winning his race iD good style. An interest ing incident in connection with the Visitors' Handicap is that Hoariri has led the field home in three successive years The Fitzroy Handicap, with which the meeting concluded, saw the full field of 26 coloured on the card go to the post Catapult counted sufficient admirers to :send bim out favourite, Sir Kay being the one best backed of the others. Catapult ■worked his way into the lead at an early istage, and he flattered the hopes of bis .admirers bv leading into the straight. The concluding stage, however, saw bim away, and it was left to Harbour JTiew io bring off .a .mild surprise.
