WINTER FAIR.
AID FOR THE UNEMPLOYED. A comprehensive Winter Fair organised by the Rev. Jasper Calder's City Mission to aid the unemployed, was opened in the Town Ilall yesterday afternoon. There were 19 stalls and side shows to interest the large number of visitors, and the floral decorations and coloured lights made a very effective scene. The central flower pagoda, on which was displayed a great variety of pot plants and cut flowers, was particularly beautiful. ~ The object of the effort had iViade a wide appeal, and assistance is being given by many people beside those associated with the City Mission and the city parishes of the Church of England. Such organisations as the \ ictoria League, the Query Club, the Church of England Men's 1 Society and the Peter Pan Club are 5 lending active support. In the afternoon • music was provided by Walter Smith's Click Clack orchestra, and in the even- [ ing bv McMinn's Syneo Symphonisers, '' who played for the dancing. In addition > to all the stalls usually appearing at such fairs there ate a number of novelty displays, and various competitions helped to maintain interest. > The fair was officially opened by Arch--1 deacon Mac Murray. He said that of all i the organisations with which he had . been associated during his 35 years' residence in Auckland none gave him more 1 satisfaction and pleasures than his association with the beginning of the Auckland City Mission. The fair will be continued to-day and to-morrow, and on Saturday evening th'e popular and successful entertainment given on Tuesday evening will be repeated.
