SEVENTEEN CHARGES LAID.
FALSE PRETENCES ALLEGED. CANADIAN RETURNED SOLDIER. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] INVERCAKGILL, Wednesday. Seventeen charges- of false pretences were preferred against Douglas Charles .Hopewell, a young Canadian, who, it is alleged, has been passing valueless cheques in various parts of the Dominion during tho past 12 months. The amount involved in the charges totals £7O, but other offences are alleged to have been committed in Dunedin, Timaru and Christchurch. Accused's counsel said his client was the son of a Canadian Judge, and had a distinguished war record, but he was a drug addict. i Hopewell was remanded for a report by the probation officer.
