RAMSAY MACDONALD.
SUDDEN SEVERE ILLNESS. IN PHILADELPHIA HOSPITAL. (Received April 25, 5.5 p.m.) A, and N.Z. . NEW YORK, April 24. A message says that Mr. Ramsay MacDonald, M.P., who is in Philadelphia, is suffering from a severe cold. . A reception in his honour which had been planned for yesterday, was cancelled. Later reports say it is rumoured that Mr. Mac Donald has suffered a serious collapse and that his condition is grave. Although the official statement made by the doctors after Mr. Mac Donald had been taken to the Jefferson Hospital indicated that he was suffering from a sore throat but was resting comfortably, it is understood that a number of specialists were called in in consultation concerning his illness, which arose from a severe cold contracted when he was at Washington. Miss Ishbel Mac Donald has refused an invitation to spend the week-end with friends in a Philadelphia suburb," in order to be near her father. While Mr. Mac Donald was lunching with the" members of the Ethical Culture Society he showed signs of being ill. He spent the night in the society's rooms, and was later taken to the hospital. A later message says Mr. Mac Donald was reported to be resting more easily and his condition had much improved. Miss Mac Donald will go to New York to deliver a radio address which her father was to have made to-day.
