WORKERS IN AMERICA.
BARRIER TO CANADIANS. r INTENSE FEELING AROUSED. (Received April 24, 6.10 p.m). A. and. N.Z. NEW YORK, April 24. An order has been issued by the Secretary of Labour excluding residents of the countries bordering on the United States from entering America without passports which have been properly visaed., and the payment of a tax of about £1 13s 6d per head. It is believed this will adversely affect 20,000 persons a day who come from Windsor, Canada, to work in Detroit. Citizens of Canada must have Canadian passports, but alien residents of the Dominion must have passports from their own countries in order to be effective. A special meeting of the Windsor Council was held, and it was decided to urge the Canadian Government immediately to intercede with the United States. The matter has caused intense feeling. It is alleged that labour unions, objjecting to the invasion of Canadian workers, have been responsible for the exclusion order. CANADIAN MIGRANTS. LOW FARES FROM SCOTLAND. A and N.Z. LONDON, April 24. An illustration of the Canadian enthusiasm to obtain migrants from Scotland for Canada was seen in the bargain fare for which a Clydebank, Glasgow, family of seven members secured passages on the «;teamer Letitia. For Is 8d the whole seven will travel to Florenceville, in New Brunswick. A Caithness family of 11 paid a total of ].os for their fares. Altogether 1000 emigrants have been carried to Canada under the scheme which seeks to obtain 3000 families as emigrants.
